Wherever on the list of purposes (1 to 9), the consultant-client relationship starts, our first job is to address the purpose what the client requests for. We never try to prolong engagements or enlarge our scope with any client. If and only if, the need arises, and client is willing to engage us on mutual consent, then alone we take up the other enlisted purposes apart from the ones for which engagement initiated in first place. To brief, the enlisted purposes (1 to 8) are generally considered legitimate for hiring a consultant agency, though some debate surrounds purpose (9). Our peers are less likely to address enlisted purposes (6 to 8) explicitly and their clients are not as likely to request these purposes also. But we are approaching enlisted purposes in the ways that involve the other purposes as well. Purposes (6 to 8) are best considered as by-products of earlier purposes, not additional ones, that become relevant only when the others have been achieved. They are essential to effective consulting even if not recognized as explicit purposes when the engagement begins with any client. In the list above (1 to 5) are better understood and practiced and are also frequently requested by the clients. However, we aspire to the higher purposes (6 to 9) on the list than most of our peers’ engagements usually endure to achieve. As these require, increasing sophistication and skills in the processes of consulting and in managing the consultant-client relationship.
